If you applied for the First Time application using your KCSE index Number and you have your National ID, kindly update the details on the HEF portal before applying. DO NOT create a new portal account.
All applications are paperless. You are not required to print any form.
For First Time applications, a PDF version of the application done, either loan and scholarship or both, will be sent to the email address you provided for your records.
A confirmation SMS with a loan application serial number is the evidence that you have successfully applied for Second and Subsequent. Kindly save the SMS for future reference.
#KaaChonjo HELB does not charge any fee to access the loan application, report any form of extortion to authorities.
A valid email address and phone number
If 18 years and above, have your National ID/Maisha card
Under 18 years: KCSE index number, Birth Certificate, and Waiting Card (if already applied for your ID)
Students’ passport size photo
Parents ID number / Death Certificate (if parent/s deceased) - for the parent/s alive, provide their phone number
KCPE/KCSE index number and examination year
Institution’s Admission number
Two Guarantors ID and phone numbers
For KUCCPS placed students: Bank card/ATM or a Safaricom number registered under the student’s ID
Visit www.hef.co.ke and access the Student Portal to register, create, and activate an account (ensure you use your personal mobile number registered under your name and National ID number).
During registration, input your National ID number/KCSE index number (for placed students below 18 years old), a valid email address, and create a password before clicking register.
Verify your account through the activation link sent to your email’s Inbox or Spam/Junk folder.
Log in to the portal and complete your profile under the My Profile tab, filling in sections regarding Personal Information, Residence, Education, Institution, and Parents. Upload all necessary documents at this stage.
Navigate to the HELB menu, under the Loan Application Tab, select the First Time Undergraduate Scholarship and Loan.
Review and consent to the personal data collection as outlined in the consent form, accepting the loan terms and conditions.
Fill in your guarantors’ details and your bank details (for students placed by KUCCPS) as requested.
Submit your completed application form online.

Track the processing status of your application on the application portal.

Click on the scholarship or loans or loans & scholarship tab, choose degree, then click “apply” on the Undergraduate Second and Subsequent Scholarship and Loan.

Answer the financial literacy questions, view results, and click “proceed”.
Click “get started” to begin the application process.
Enter your phone number (registered in your name) and National ID number to verify ownership.
Read and agree to the scholarship/loan terms and conditions to proceed.
Click “request loan” to view and verify your loan details.
Select your preferred loan payment option.
Click “submit” to complete the application. A pop-up message and loan serial number will confirm successful submission.
Receive notifications on awards and disbursements of upkeep, tuition loans, and bursary where applicable.
